  1. 1. The warning that Hrothgar gives Beowulf is that he needs to be careful from this battle and protect himself and the townspeople. Also, Hrothgar wants him to protect him from Grendel so he wants him to succeed.
    2. He takes on the dragon because he knows he has to win this battle and he would rather die in battle then lose to the dragon. He doesn't want the dragon to win so his lack of confidence helps him out in the battle.
    3. Beowulf is rightly concerned about how the rest of the world will see him. He doesn't want people to think he lost the battle for the people and they would be disappointed. That's why Beowulf later leaves the gold in the cave beneath the mere, after defeating the mother, he has to return with Grendel's head and the magic sword's hilt rather than treasure. That shows that he has reputation has gotten better from this.

  2. 1.) Hrothgar warns Beowulf to stay modest. He tells him to stay modest because god gives the gifts of wisdom and power to men. These gifts are given so much and used so much that sometimes the men forget they are mortal and forget god blessed them. When he is to proud it is like they has been shot in the heart by a the devil. They will also Ignore all signs of doom to recieve gods gifts. I dont think he knows anything that beowulf doesnt i believe he is telling beowulf about people like himself.
2.) Although Beowulf is old, weak, and lacks confidence he still fights the dragon, because he believes it is destiny that he and the dragon die together. He also wants to protect the people who suffered from the dragon because of its rath and because he is a king and thats what they should do.
3.) Yes their is a new theme that emerged in this poem. The new theme that emerged in this peom would be that people change through their experiences in which they face. Beowulf went from wanting glory after fighting to actually wanting to help and protect his people on the Geats.

  3. Hrothgar told Beowulf not to become full of himself and succumb to his selfish desires."Choose, dear Beowulf, the better part, eternal rewards. Do not give way to pride. For a brief while your strength is in bloom but it fades quickly...." Hrothgar knows that he will never see Beowulf again and this foreshadows the storys outcome. Even though Beowulf is too old and weak, he still feels the need to prove to himself and others that he is not all talk, that he can actually take down the dragon like he hoped to do. I do not think any new themes have emerged just yet. The characters have not changed.

  4. Hrothgar tells Beowulf to stay modest and not to get over confident. Being overconfident will hurt Beowulf. Hrothgar starts to to speak from his past experiences and tells Beowulf that being too proud of himself will end up hurting him. Beowulf decides that it is his duty and his destiny to fight the dragon. He believed that he needed to protect the Geats, but in order to do that he believed that they both needed to lose their lives together.
A theme from this poem would be that people change through their experiences in the world. For example, Beowulf started out wanting to beat Grendel for his own self pride, but towards the end of the poem he wanted to defeat the dragon for the people, not for himself.

  5. --Hrothgar issues a warning to Beowulf. He warns that if Beowulf does not be careful, he will abuse his strength and wisdom from God. Hrothgar tells of a person that became abusive of his strength. He became bloodthirsty and killed anyone in his path. In doing this his followers were estranged from him and he suffered great sorrow. Hrothgar warns Beowulf because he fears that Beowulf will become this in the future. Hrothgar is old and wise and has seen it happen before.

--Beowulf is too old, too weak, and completely lacks confidence in his ability, yet he takes on the dragon. The dragon had destroyed his kingdom, including his own home. Since Beowulf was the king, he felt obligated to slay the dragon. "He was a good king!" Beowulf is also overconfident in his nature. He seeks fame.

--A new theme has emerged in Beowulf. The theme is that you mustn't become overconfident. Hrothgar warns Beowulf of becoming overconfident. He says that Beowulf may lose his followers if he abuses his strength and wisdom. Beowulf is sure this won't happen.

  6. -Hrothgar warns Beowulf that he must stay virtuous and protect his people. He knows the dangers of not following this from the past. As former king Heremod also a great warrior, turned against his own people of the Danes as he possessed much pride and arrogance. He doesn't want Beowulf to do the same.

-Beowulf felt that the dragon was sent by God to punish him. He wanted to make this his last battle and end his life with the dragon.

-Beowulf's transition from a strong and powerful warrior, to a wise and brave king.

  7. Hrothgar told Beowulf not to be concieted. Hrothgar knows Beowulf womt be around anymore. He also takes on the dragon in battle to prove to himself and to others that he is the real deal and walking the walk not talking the talk. So far there have been no new themes that have come up yet nor are there any new characters.

  10. Hrothgar is trying to help beowulf and tells Beowulf to stay modest and not become to confident. being to confident will hurt Beowulf. 11. Hrothgar tells Beowulf to not be so confident in himself because he will get hurt in the end. This is foreshadowing. Hrothgar is hiding the fact that Beowulf will most likely end up being killed. The theme has changed because Beowulf is no longer attempting to defeat beasts that he knows is a hard fight souly for himself to get fame and fortune. He now does it for the sake of his people. He chooses to attempt to slay the Dragon because it had attacked his kingdom....destroying everything including his own home.

  13. Hrothgar tells beowulf to stop being so confident in his ability to go into dangerous places to solve other peoples issues since he is getting older. Beowulf takes on the dragon to carry on his legacy as a hero and someone who is praised. He also is a very courageous person who doesn't fear much. Beowulf also has a part of him that shows that he is selfless and is always willing to help people when there is something in it for him. A theme that come out is that people will do impossible tasks to try to help people who really need it.

  14. Beowulf was told to be modest and not be so confident , this was told to him Hrothgar.
He tell him this cause he knows something beowulf doesnt. Also, the reason beowulf fights the dragon is because he wants to should that hes still the might hero they all have come to know , even in his old age. There has been no new theme in this poem.

Beowulf takes on the dragon because he fells that he should do it for his people and for his pride and to prove that he can still stand his ground in a fight

  16. Hrothgar warns beowulf to not be too proud of himself and be a little bit more modest. Since beowulf has done all these heroic things he has become a little big headed. When Hrothgar tells beowulf about Grendels mother he says pretty much that yeah I'll kill her too. Without even taking in the thought of his possible death.

-Beowulf fights the dragon because he beleives that it is his responsibility to protect his people and he and the Dragon are destined to die together. When he first hears about this dragon he rides out to kill it. Thi sshows that he is still fighting for the spoils of war and the glory that comes with it.

-There is a new theme it is, dont be too proud. When Beowulf goes and fights Grendels mother he is told that he needs to be more modest. The fight with Grendel from what I can tell did not last that long, the fight with his mother lasted nine hours. This shows that Beowulf is a little bit overconfident.

  17. 1.) Hrothgar tells beowulf to not get full of himself, and to know that he is not invincible.
2.) Beowulf takes on the dragon for the people. He does it to protect them, and also because there is a reward and fame that will follow when he defeats the dragon. He would rather die trying than not trying at all.
3.) Yes there is a new theme. Beowulf becomes full of himself and doesnt realize that he cant do everything and that at some point he will fail.

  18. Hrothgar tells Beowulf not to get too confident and to stay modest. People will start to dislike him if he shows off.
Why would he quit now, he would rather die than show a lack of confidence.
With confidence you can achieve greatness
