Reaction to Part I of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight"

- - -  Identify two ways that the society of Gawain is different than the society of Beowulf, and identify two ways in which they are similar.  Use evidence from the poem to support your response.

- - -  The Green Knight is very specific when he issues his challenge.  Explain why and explain why he makes Gawain repeat the instructions.

  1. -The time of gawain expresses love and chivalry not nearly as much as the heroes in beowulf. Gawain also has alot more focus on Christianity as beowulf is a pagan religion based book. They both talk about heroes in a sense (Beowulf and king arthur) and still tend to "talk" them up to be bigger than life. Both readings also tend to talk about religion although they aren't talking about the same religion.
    - He is this specific to properly and promptly get his challenge across to arthur. He makes sure he understands the challenge by having gawain in a sense reissue the challenge presented.

  2. 1. They are different because in Gawain they have a leader and he doesn't abandon his people. Also, it talks about king Arthur nephew was the Gawain and there society had knights and Beowulf's society didn't. The king is very involved with his people and wants to make sure there happy and the king in Beowulf didn't care about his people and he went into hiding because of Grendel. They are similar because they are from around the same time period. Also, Beowulf and Sir Gawain are both hero's in the poem's. They both have great strength as a leader.
    2. He issues this challenge because he wants to see if anyone will really fight him and take of his head. He repeated this so many times because he wanted to make sure everyone heard him and that he'll return on year to the Green Chapel.

  3. 1.) The two ways that the society of Gawain is different than the societyvolunteers as the game seems to imply certain death for whomever

of Beowulf, are that gawains had a feast for a good harvest. However, in beowulf they had a feast for a hero that defeated grendel and gave them peace. One way these two are alike is in gawain they are afraid of a green knight in which noone knows alot about. In beowulf the people are afraid of grendel in which they didnt know about. Another way they are the same is in beowulf he fights to help the king of the danes people, and in gawain, gawain fights the green knight to help his king. So they are fighting for a high power. The last way these two are different is that in beowulf, after his battles he recieved rewards as in gold and glory. However, in gawain, gawains reward was death by getting his head cut off, and not recieving glory do to him saying he wouldnt be missed.
    2) The green knight is very specific when he issues his challenge because he wants to make sure that the challenger knows that he gets to strike the green knight on the spot cutting his head off, but in return in a year the green knight gets to do the same thing resulting in the challenger to death. The green knight makes gawain repeat his instructions because gawain was already caught lieing once in the poem so he may want to make sure he understands what he is getting into before he agrees. Or the green knight wants to make sure that gawain will go through with it and not just say he will so he makes him repeat it making sure he understands his challenge.

  4. 1) The society is more rich then the society of Hrothgar. They have giant feasts on big holidays and making sure no one goes hungry. In Beowulf there is on person defending the people, while in the other society the knights of the round table protect the people.

    2) He needs to make sure that he was listening also to test his courage.

  5. 1. One difference that I noticed in the society of the poem and Beowulf is how different they value power in a leader. When the Green Knight approached Arthur with the game that he created, Arthur was quick to accept the game, and participate. Before Arthur was going to use the axe on the Green Knight, Sir Gawain tells Arthur that he would rather use the axe against the Green Knight. I believe this showed his lack of trust in the King, and maybe he believed that he couldn't get the job done, which we later learn that neither of them would of been able to kill the Knight. One of the similarities that I noticed was how they value their knights. They sit at a round table, like Beowulf, to show that each knight has their value, and one knight doesn't value more than the other. The other similarity was how they approached problems. Both poems made the characters feel frightened by the problem that was against them, and they needed one individual to stand up and do so.

    2. I believe that the Green Knight knows from the start that either Arthur, or someone would accept the game, and that he would survive the strike that his own axe would give him. He makes Sir Gawain repeat the rules of the game, because he wants him to be sure that no matter what the outcome of the strike of the axe would be, the strike would be given to him in exactly one year and one day. He is very specific about the challenge, because he wanted to make sure they know the challenge ahead of them, and see who would step up for the battle. Making the Knights and Arthur understand the challenge makes them be sure they'll never forget about the challenge, and when it is time for the returning attack, they will remember what happened, and what could happen to Sir Gawain.

  6. Gawain is a knight to his people, a human hero while Beowulf is a fictional king to his people. Gawain is perceived as more real and relatable while Beowulf is seen as fictional because of his greatness. Both have great strength and put lives at risk. Beowulf is arrogant while Gawain is a true and humble being.

  7. Both Beowulf's and Gawain's society's are alike, but they are also different. In both society's, the people all worship the hero/king. In "Beowulf," everyone loved him and gave him treasures for his fights. In Gawain, all the people looked up to Gawain, their king. Another similarity would be that the people both sent them on a quest. Gawain was sent by the people to the castle to defeat the green knight and to finish the challenge. In "Beowulf," the people sent him to take their land back. Although there were similarities, their were also differences. In "Beowulf," people were more selfish. For example, although the people sent Beowulf to claim their land back, he did it for himself. Gawain goes on his quest do the people, not for himself. Also, for Gawain this was a game to him. Killing the Green Knight would finish the game. In Beowulf, it was not a game, he did it for glory and pride.
The Green Knight was specific in giving his instructions for the game because he wanted to mock them. He wanted to put fear in whoever accepts his challenge. He made him reappear him so he can make them realize what they are getting themselves into.

  8. Both society's are kingdoms.. Beowulf and the prince are similar because they are both warriors. The difference is that the prince was a knight and Beowulf was a warrior. Another similarity is that in both stories, the people have an enemy they need to fight.
The green knight is specific because he wants Gawain to do exactly what he says.. He makes him repeat it just to make sure he would know what the green knight wants

  9. Gawain Society is different from Beowulf society in the sense, number one, Gawain society revolves around the seven deadly sins. Religion is huge
In Beowulf, Beowulf and his noble actions were huge, the most important figure was the King followed by his band of warriors! The ability to fight was highly prized.

The Green Knight was very specific, at least in my eyes, because he was showing how even with being very very clear that temptation could win over Gawain. I feel the Green knight is the devil, the devil makes everything sound sweeter, even when it's clear they are not. The Green Knight is good at this! He makes Gawain look past his reasonable senses

  10. 1. Prince Gawains society is more rich then Beowulfs. They have giant feasts on big holidays and making sure no one goes hungry. The Knights of the round table make sure everyone is safe while in beowulf hes the only one protecting the people.

    2. He needs to test his courage and to listen more carefully.

  12. They are similar Because the are both warriors and also both society's are kingdoms. But these to poems are different Because Gawain has a christianity society and beowulf is a pagan religion. Gawain thought of it has a game and that if defeated the green knight the game would be over. Beowulf was not a game he was selfish and wanted the pride and glory from the Geats. The Green Knight is very Specific because he wants Gawain to do what he says he makes him repeat himself to make sure he knows what challenge he is up for and to make sure he is going to do it.

  13. Both poems brag about how great there leader was but beowulf had a paega n religion and the author talked about how much better they would be if they were to practice christainity. They are different because beowulf focus's more on the ends rather than the means. What I mean by that is Beowulf did not care how he completed his task he only cared about it being completed. The people of Gawains time care about honour and doing the "right thing".

-The Green knight is specific because he wants to make sure that whoever partakes in this challenge understands the rules. He makes Gawain repeat this because he wants to know that he knows what is going to happen
