- - - Are Eliezer's actions regarding his dying father honorable? Explain your answer.
- - - Why is the memoir called Night?
-
- - Is the Holocaust the last major human catsptrophe? I mean,
seriously, this kind of thing couldn't ever happen again, right?
Explain.
1. In family value, I do not think that all of Eliezer’s actions were honorable. He did not think about his father the entire time. This is shown when he wakes up and says “This is the first time I thought of my father”. You could argue that Eliezer’s actions to take care of his father were honorable, but the fact that he completely forgot and did not think about his father for periods of time is dishonorable. A few weeks before his father died, Eliezer abandoned his father during an air raid, when he ran with the mob. This was dishonorable. The next day he spent hours looking for him. After that, he took care of him. Even though he had feelings that he didn’t want to share his food or care for him, his father didn’t know that, and Eliezer still cared for his father. The night before his father died, his father called for him, but Eliezer was afraid that the guard would beat him, so he stayed in his bed. To Eliezer, this was a dishonorable act, and he would spend the rest of his life blaming himself for not going to him. As soon as roll call was over, Eliezer went to his father’s side, and stayed with him until he was ordered to go to sleep. The way that he thought of himself and what his father would want is honorable. He was worried about self-survival and I believe that his father would have respected that. He did his best to care for his father, but he will always blame himself for the times that he failed.
ReplyDelete2. Night is the name of the book, because that is how he felt about that part of his life. Night is usually described as dark and eerie. This was a very dark and depressing time for Eliezer during his life, so Night is a good word to describe the setting, Eliezer’s feelings, and the time period.
3. I don’t think that Germans would allow another Holocaust to occur in their country, but the Holocaust was not the last major human catastrophe. From 1958 – 1962, China’s leader, Mao Zedong, killed 45 million people in four years. A modern-day Holocaust is occurring in Darfur, Africa, where an estimated 400,000 people have been murdered, and 2.5 million people have been forced into refugee camps in nearby Chad. In Syria, Christians are being attacked by Islamic terrorists. They are being beheaded, crucified and burned, alive. Christians are fleeing their homes, so they don’t get murdered by the terrorists. The world doesn’t see these events happening, the same way that German townspeople “looked unsurprised” as the cattle cars passed through their towns, as Eliezer and the other prisoners were being taken to Buchenwald. So yes, it is happening again.
Eliezers actions regarding his dying father is greatly honorable. Through everything that has happened, Eliezer stays right by his side. All though he may think that he has a better chance of surviving without having to care for his father, he tends to his every need. At the time of his death Eliezer does not cry. However, I feel as though that is because he knows that his father was not killed by the Germans and he feels as though his goal was accomplished... he kept his family the safest he could keep them. Also that his father was not in pain anymore and was no longer holding on to life souly for Eleizers sake.
ReplyDeleteIt is called night because of the darkness that came down during the Holocaust. It is also a jewish tradition that it is the beginning of a new day.
no it is not the last one. Every day we see violence and racism. It is something that can not be stopped at its full extent.

1.) Eliezers actions regarding his father dieing to me wasnt honorable. The reason i say it wasnt is because when his father died eliezer was some what happy that he did. He was happy that his father died because now he could worry about himself and not him and his father. This shows that now the camp was everyone for themselves and not to help others in anyway. This isnt honorable do to him not really caring that he just lost his father it instead made him feel "free of responsibility.
ReplyDelete2.) The memoir is called Night because the days at the camp were pretty much never mentioned because they werent as bad as the nights. For example the winter when he describes the cold nights and people dieing from the cold. Also the fact that every night felt like a year is symbolic of the time of the holocaust describing how bad it was. An other reason is it only took one night to change a very religious person to go against what he had studied his entire life before the camp night. Lastly the book seemed to be a long daro night that never seemed to end. That is why the memior was called Night.
3.) No another major catsptrophe can in my mind happen again. The reason why i say it can happen again is what isis is doing right now. The killing of innocent people on youtube and more and yet noone has really just went over there and stop them from what they are doing. Another reason is countries can be a "power house" or work with ither nations to do what the nazis did to the jews and to change people beliefs. Lastly there is a saying that history tends to repeat itself so i do see this happening again somewhere on earth in the furture. That is why i say that this kind of human catsptrophe can happen again in the future.
1. Yes, i think his actions were honorable. He was thinking about his own survival but his father dying was a shame. I would think he feels relief because his father was suffering so this put him out of misery and made Elizer feel better.
ReplyDelete2. It is called night because it is about that last night that Elizer and his father had together and about the camps. That was the most eventful night so the book is called that.
3. it could happen again and I know for a fact it'll happen maybe not in our lifetime but it our kids or there kids. They were probably thinking that then, like Nazi's can't kill over like 6 million people but then ended up doing it so it's bound to happen again. This country is good at repeating history.
1. His actions were honorable and dishonorable. Honorable because he stayed with his father when he was dying. Dishonorable because he was unable to think selflessly even with his father dying.
ReplyDelete2. He called the book night because it was a dark time in his life and in a way it says he never knew wether or not he would make it until the next morning. It is also a dark book that is pretty depressing.
3. Stalin killed between 34 and 39 million of his own people during the same time. I don't understand why you never hear about that when the nazis only killed 6 million jews. Stalin killed 6.5 times more people at the same time so yes it can happen agian.
