  1. 1. The poem signifies Eliezer beginning to lose faith. “Never shall I forget that smoke, never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky” is the point where Eliezer realizes what is happening to his people, the smoke is his fellow people and Mrs. Schachter doesn’t seem to be as crazy as they thought. He questions why his God would let something this terrible happen to his people. “Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever”, when he says this, he is saying that his faith will never be the same. He also says that his God and soul have been ruined. This suggests that he is losing trust in his religion. In the line, “Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself”, Eliezer is saying that he will never forget what he saw and it will forever haunt him. His views on life and religion changed dramatically in only a couple of days.
    2. Eliezer’s relationship with his father changes a lot when he arrives at the camp. With the short time he has spent there, he begins to lose his faith. Early in the book he was not close with his father because he was always deep in his studies. His father did not think that Eliezer was ready to learn more about his faith. This drove Eliezer away from his father. Now that they both are at the camp in fear of their lives, they have become closer. As Eliezer questions his faith, he gains a better relationship with his dad. Now that the women and men have been separated, Eliezer and his father are the only family they have. This has also pushed them closer together. Their relationship is becoming stronger as Eliezer’s story continues. This is important because they will depend on each other for survival.

  2. -It is to show and explain the terrible living conditions and treatment that they will be given at Brikenau. It also shows that he has given up his faith in humanity and god because of the terrible things that his people are going through.
    - It becomes closer because they realize that they need to stick together to survive

  3. The significance of that poem is how the sights that Wiesel saw and the others in concentrations camps will stay with them for the rest of their lives. They will never forget how these camps destroyed them and everyone around them forever.

In the beginning of the book Eliezer barely saw his forever because he was never home. Now Eliezer never leaves his fathers side. All he thinks about is staying close to his father because he is the only one Eliezer has now.

  4. 1.) The significance of the poem in the middle of page 34 is a few things. First it tells the story of the first night and what eliezer saw and went through and how it only took just one night to change eliezer for the rest of his life. It also shows eliezers questioning his faith with god with the poem. With the poem it looks like eliezer is questions why god is letting this happen to him? Lastly the poem goes on to show the things that eliezer will never forget for as long as he lives his life he will never forgot this first night at the camp with the smoke, fire, and more. These are the ways that show the significance of the poem.
2.) Eliezers relationship with his father changed since the beginning of the book. At the beginning his dad wouldnt let him study the religion he wanted to because he was to "young and it was dangerous". Also eliezer felt as if his dad was to caught up with the town more than his family. However now in the book it seems that is all the past and they have moved on. Now in the book eliezer is asking the germans to be with his dad if they have to work together or just to cling to him to be close. Also when a guard hits his father he goes on to say just the other day he would of had his nails in the guard but wonders why he didnt do anything did he change that fast? Next his dad tells him he is okay and it didnt hurt at all. With these things being said it looks like to me that now they want to be together and are caring of one another.

  5. 1. It's the start of him losing faith. He is starting to realize that maybe god isn't on his side during this terrible event. Eliezer will never forget those things he saw at the camp like the fire, the smoke, gas chambers and many more.
    2. In the beginning of the book, his father really didn't want him to do anything involving his religion because he was still young. His father seemed to pay more attention to his home town more than his own family. Now, the relationship seems like it's moving forward and they are looking in the past. He wants to be close to his father now more than even being in the camp so he holds on to him for dear life.
